Track and Field Opens Up in Watsonville

Your Soledad Track and Field teams were in action last Friday in Watsonville. Head Coach Jeremy Hoeflinger reported:

The Aztec Track and Field team took to the track, and field, for their season opener at the Winter Time Trails at Watsonville High School last Friday. Our athletes competed hard and met many goals that were set leading up to this meet. While the competition was stiff we did have a number of standout performances. Freshman sprinter, Jocelyn Valdez, ran that 100 meter dash in 14.07 placing 5th overall in the varsity division. Sophomore distance runner won the varsity girls 3200 meter race setting a big personal record with a time 13:03.08. Our Frosh/Soph boys relay team consisting of sprinters: Jose Zamora, Daniel Valdez, Jesus Guerra and Jose Ornelas, took first place with an impressive time of 52.57. Carlos Espinosa, a sophomore distance runner, was the fastest miler on the track with a time of 4:53.68 and was also the second fastest two miler by only 2.5 seconds with a final time of 10:51.06. Finally, junior sprinter and jumper, Adrian Mellin had an outstanding day with three lifetime best marks in the Pole Vault, 110 High Hurdles and the 300 Intermediate Hurdles. Adrian cleared 9 feet in the PV placing 3 rd overall, ran the 110 HH in 18.94 also placing 3 rd , and was the fastest 300 IM of the night with a time of 46.53. Our next two meets are at Monterey HS on Wednesday the 6 th starting at 3:00pm where we open up league competition. Followed by another track meet on Saturday the 9th where we are back at Watsonville HS for the Wildcat relays. That meet starting at 9:00am.
