Winter Sports Wrap-Up

Your Winter Sports Aztecs had one rollercoaster of a season. With boys soccer making it another history-making run for a state title to a record number of participants of wrestlers making it to CCS.

Boys and girls basketball had some growing pains this season moving into the new PCAL being placed in a very competitive Cypress Division. Head coach Tatiana Rodriguez of girls basketball and head coach Nick Twitchell of boys basketball wrapped up the season expressing that this was a learning curve that they will take into next season and all they see is positive going into next year.

Boys and girls soccer had some great changes and historic moves! Girls soccer started off the season with new head coach Maria Zamora taking the captains seat and turned around the program. They were placed in the Cypress Division and finished up the season in 3rd place! On the boys soccer team, head coach Reyes Mendoza expressed that this was going to be his farewell season and wanted to go out making history; they sure made sure of it. Boys soccer landed in the elite Gabilan Division and played the state's best in league play. Soledad ended up 4th in the divisional play and took their CCS entry into the Open Division ranked #3! After a heartbreaking loss (0-1) to Branham in the semi-finals, the Aztecs did qualify for the CIF Division II Playoffs. This was a historic first for any Soledad sports team! They were ranked #7 and played a very difficult #2 Richmond and again, had a heartbreaker loss (0-1) in the quarterfinals ending their season and chance for a state title.

Boys and girls wrestling showed strong numbers this season with one of the larger girls squads in the PCAL. As the season went on, the fine-tuning of skills and development really started to show in the boys and girls squads. At the end of the line, the boys team was tied for 1st place going into the divisional tournament. As the dust settled after the tournament, the Aztecs ended up in 2nd with a slight margin with Greenfield of 10 points. This sent them to the PCAL tournament where we had 9 boys wrestle out with the whole league for a CCS berth. Onto CCS, 6 of the 9 made it along with 11 girls! They wrestled for two days and their season ended with no one qualifying for CIF.

All in all, this was a great sports season and the Aztec Nation is very proud of what they did. Cannot wait to see what the next season has in store for the Aztec Nation! Way to show "The Aztec Way" for the Aztec Nation! GO AZTECS!!
